Coconut - The best option for intercrops, K R Vishwambharan

Thodupuzha, 19-10-2010.

Coconut is the ideal crop to have intercrops said Sri K R Vishwambharan IAS, Vice Chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University. He was inauguratig the seminar on Coconut and Inter-crops as part of the Karshikamela conducted by Gandhiji Study Centre in Thodupuzha. Lot of coconut plantations in Kerala are left unattended and farmers are not doing any inter-crops he said. The average yield from a coconut tree in the state is 38 coconuts. If extra care is given to the trees this can be increased to 120-130 coconuts per year and even up to 200 in some cases. He also said that having inter-crops like nutmeg, banana, vegetables and other crops will increase crop security for farmers. In order to increase the price of coconut, Kerala must focus on value added finished products like oil, pulp, desiccated coconut etc he commented.

In her presidential address Smt. E S Bijimol MLA said that the yearly Karshikamela in Thodupuzha has caused a new awakening and enthusiasm among the farmers in the region. There were study classes on various aspects of coconut planting and intercrops by Dr. Swarup John from Regional Agricultural Research Station in Kayamkulam, Dr. Remani Gopalakrishnan, Deputy Director, Coconut Development Board and Dr. V Krishnakumar from CPCRI. Sri George Augustine gave welcome address and Sri Salim Padinjarekkara said vote of thanks.
